National Institute of Technology Patna is the 18th NIT established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, following the renaming of the historic Bihar College of Engineering on 28 January 2004.
The institute traces its roots back to 1886, making it one of the oldest engineering institutions in India (6th oldest). Originally started as a Pleaders Survey Training School, it evolved into the Bihar College of Engineering in 1924 and expanded to offer postgraduate programs in 1978.
NIT Patna is located on the serene southern bank of the River Ganges, near the iconic Gandhi Ghat—a site of national significance associated with the immersion of Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes.
