Until 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the sole center for agricultural education in South India. Recognized as a postgraduate center in 1958 and expanded with a new campus in Madurai in 1965, these institutions formed the nucleus of TNAU, which was formally established in 1971.
