The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) traces its roots to the establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, in 1868, which was later relocated to Coimbatore. In 1920, it became affiliated with Madras University and took full responsibility for agricultural education and research, supporting the State Agricultural Department through its scientific contributions. Until 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the sole center for agricultural education in South India. Recognized as a postgraduate center in 1958 and expanded with a new campus in Madurai in 1965, these institutions formed the nucleus of TNAU, which was formally established in 1971.
